The Tucson Jazz Institute perform “Cotton Club Stomp” at the 2015 Essentially Ellington Competition and Festival.

Composed by Duke Ellington, “Cotton Club Stomp” is named after the famous New York venue where the Duke Ellington Orchestra was house band from 1927 to 1931.

Essentially Ellington is an annual program in which fifteen of North America’s best high school jazz bands perform for a panel of judges. Occurring in May, the competition includes jam sessions, workshops, an awards ceremony, and a closing performance from the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis.
