Lennie Tristano (1919-78) was a very original and virtuosic pianist who, due to his mostly reclusive life, became as involved in teaching a wide variety of jazz artists as he did in performing.

There are only a few films of Tristano playing including this solo miniset from a jazz festival in Paris from 1965.

Lennie Tristano performs a rather dark transformation of “Darn That Dream,” swings even with his dense chords on “Lullaby Of The Leaves,” and creates a rather imaginative version of “Imagination.”

Even more than six decades later, Lennie Tristano’s music still sounds futuristic.
