Of the countless number of projects that he worked on during his career, Duke Ellington’s three Sacred Concerts were among those that were closest to the great bandleader-pianist-arranger-composer’s heart.

His first Sacred Concert debuted on Sept. 16, 1965, and fortunately, it was filmed.

On this wonderful excerpt, Ellington and his orchestra perform “David Danced Before The Lord” which is really a medium-tempo version of “Come Sunday.”

In addition to an effective choir, the stars of the performance are the brilliant tap dancer Bunny Briggs and Jon Hendricks who sings the lyrics and scats at his best.
