Soprano Summit teamed together Bob Wilbur (soprano, clarinet and alto) and Kenny Davern (soprano and clarinet) during the late 1970s and on later occasions as Soprano Reunion.
It was one of the top groups of the period, helping keep small-group swing and hot jazz very much alive.
This version of the group from around 1979 features Wilbur, Davern, and guitarist-singer Marty Grosz along with an unidentified bassist and, surprisingly, no drummer.
Grosz is the main star of “Doin’ The New Lowdown,” both as a chordal guitar soloist in the Carl Kress style and as a good-humored singer.
Wilbur (on a curved soprano sax) and Davern on clarinet also take fine solos.
