Shelly Berg is a brilliant pianist who has the technique of an Oscar Peterson along with a swinging style.
At a concert at the University of Miami in 2025, he was joined by the Emmet Cohen Trio (with pianist Cohen, bassist Philip Norris, and drummer Kyle Poole), singer Catherine Russell, altoist Patrick Bartley, and multi-instrumentalist Scott Robinson who is heard playing trumpet.
First Berg and Cohen play a rather wild and joyful piano duet, sharing a single piano and often changing positions without missing a beat.
Catherine Russell sings a chorus, altoist Patrick Bartley plays with intensity over Berg’s riffing, Robinson has a spot, and then Berg takes solo honors before Russell takes the song out.
Quite fun.
