Warne Marsh (1927-87), a distinctive cool-toned tenor-saxophonist inspired by Lennie Tristano, was a pure improviser who loved playing over chord changes and creating fresh ideas.

He passed away onstage on Dec. 18, 1987 when he was just 60.

This performance of “Easy Living” (a song associated with Billie Holiday and Lester Young) is from two months earlier, on Oct. 18, and features Marsh with the skilled guitarist Larry Koonse, bassist Seward McCain, and drummer Jim Zimmerman.

Particularly when he returns after Koonse’s fine solo, Marsh comes up with fresh ideas that uplift the swing standard.
