A major if sometimes underrated tenor-saxophonist, Eric Alexander has been on scores of rewarding recordings since the early 1990s.

He plays everything from straight-ahead jazz to music inspired by John Coltrane.

Alexander often employed his mentor and former teacher, the late pianist Harold Mabern, in his quartet.

For their version of “Embraceable You,” Alexander and Mabern are joined by bassist John Webber and drummer Joe Farnsworth.

Alexander plays throughout with warmth while Mabern displays his wit, emulating Erroll Garner in spots and quoting some bebop standards.
