Ted Nash (the son of trombonist Dick Nash and the nephew of tenor-saxophonist Ted Nash) has long been a very talented multi-instrumentalist who long ago mastered most of the reed instruments.

While his regular job is with the Jazz At Lincoln Center Orchestra, Nash has also had a viable solo career, leading a series of rewarding records while playing tenor, alto, soprano, alto flute, piccolo, bass clarinet and occasionally clarinet.

On this performance from 2017, he performs one of Johnny Mandel’s most famous compositions, “Emily,” on clarinet as a duet with pianist Gary Versace.

While Nash plays melodically, Versace takes an adventurous solo before the clarinetist ends the piece with some beautiful notes.
