En El Sosiego

Pianist and composer George Cables was born on November 14, 1944 in New York City, New York.

Cables is one of the many jazz musicians to play with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers before launching a successful career of his own.

His impressive discography has kept the sound of bebop piano alive and well.

His original training was in classical music at the famous performing arts high school (“Fame.”)

He arrived not knowing anything about jazz, but discovered Miles and Trane and never looked back.

In addition to leading his own groups, Cables has performed and recorded with Joe Henderson, Max Roach, Art Blakey, Sonny Rollins, Roy Haynes, Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, Tony Williams, Bobby Hutcherson, Sarah Vaughan, and Dizzy Gillespie.

Cables also performed extensively with Art Pepper (who he called “Mr. Beautiful”) playing on his final album, a duet with Cables called “Goin’ Home.”

Recorded at the 15th annual Festival Internacional de Jazz de Punta del Este in 2011.
