First Song – 1989

Abbey Lincoln

An emotional version of Charlie Haden’s song

Abbey Lincoln was a major jazz singer who always went her own way, singing superior songs and writing some gems of her own.

In 1989 she appeared on David Sanborn’s much-beloved Night Music show.

The singer is joined by altoist Sanborn (who takes a very passionate solo), guitarist Hiram Bullock, pianist Philippe Saisse, bassist Tom Barney, drummer Omar Hakim, and percussionist Don Alias.

Abbey Lincoln sings a heartfelt version of bassist Charlie Haden’s finest original, “First Song.”
