Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter were close friends for decades.

Shortly after Shorter’s passing in 2023, Hancock led an all-star quintet on Jazz Day, performing Shorter’s best-known composition, “Footprints.”

The veteran pianist is joined by trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire, tenor-saxophonist Walter Smith III, bassist Ben Williams, and Mark Merella on percussion.

Hancock, Akinmusire and Smith all take adventurous solos that Shorter would have enjoyed.
