Christmas and holiday classics often have melodies and chord changes that lend themselves well to being played by New Orleans jazz musicians.
“Frosty The Snowman,” which was composed by Walter “Jack” Rollins and Steve Nelson, had its first hit recording in 1950 by Gene Autry; Jimmy Durante, Nat King Cole and Guy Lombardo also recorded popular versions.
The Uptown Lowdown Jazz Band was a popular Dixieland/hot jazz group that made a series of fine albums during 1978-2005.
The 2014 version of the band seen here consisted of cornetist Bert Barr, trombonist Andy Hall, clarinetist John Goodrich, altoist and bass saxophonist Paul Wolz, pianist Rose Marie Barr, banjoist Al LaTourette, Paul Hagglund on tuba, and drummer Randy Woltz.
They play a spirited version of “Frosty The Snowman” which contains some particularly enjoyable cornet playing.
