Tenor-saxophonist Zoot Sims (1925-85) was always famous for his ability to swing in every situation.
It is no exaggeration to say that Sims always performed with enthusiasm and that he never seemed to play a chorus that was not inspired.
At the time that he performed and recorded “Gone With The Wind” in Sweden on Nov. 21, 1984, in a trio with guitarist Rune Gustafsson and bassist Red Mitchell, Sims only had four months left to live due to lung cancer; other than a session three days later with Scott Hamilton, this was his final recording.
And yet, Zoot Sims still sounds very much in prime form, swinging away without running short of appealing ideas; Gustafsson and Mitchell also take excellent solos.
