Joe Lovano has been one of jazz’s top tenor-saxophonist since at least the 1980s.
In his career he has been featured in many settings, sometimes playing quite freely and at times pushing the boundaries of hard bop.
Pianist James Weidman has also had an illustrious career, working with everyone from Sonny Stitt and Abbey Lincoln to Steve Coleman and Cassandra Wilson.
At their 2023 concert performance of Thelonious Monk’s “Hackensack” (which is based on the chords of “Lady Be Good”), Lovano and Weidman play a relaxed but swinging duet that could be considered modern bebop, revisiting their roots.
