The powerful pianist McCoy Tyner and the remarkable tenor-saxophonist Michael Brecker teamed up in 1995 to record a quartet album called Infinity.
Three years later at the 1998 Newport Jazz Festival, they performed a set together that was fortunately filmed.
First Tyner, bassist Avery Sharpe and drummer Aaron Scott create a heated rendition of “Have You Met Miss Jones” that has Tyner displaying plenty of passion and virtuosity in a style that he had largely invented 35 years earlier.
Then Michael Brecker joins for “Impression,” really stretching out and tearing into the song.
“Impressions” also includes a lengthy drum solo from Scott before Brecker brings the performance to a close.
