One of the top vibraphonists of the 2020s, Joel Ross is also a skilled composer.
His “Hostile,” which is inspired by classical music and was included in his Gospel Music album, is anything but “hostile.”
The stimulating piece is performed by Ross in a sextet also including altoist Josh Johnson, tenor-saxophonist Maria Grand, pianist Jeremy Corren, bassist Kanoa Mendenhall, and drummer Jeremy Dutton.
While altoist Johnson has a short spot, this is very much a showcase for the impressive vibraphonist.
