Maynard Ferguson and Al Hirt did not cross paths that often during their careers.
Ferguson toured the country with his big band and combos while Hirt mostly played in New Orleans, running his own club and often featuring Dixieland-oriented music.
However they were both dazzling virtuosos and, as is clear during this performance, mutual admirers.
Accompanied by pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Billy Higgins, Hirt is well featured, Ferguson takes a vocal, and they trade off briefly near the conclusion of a very spontaneous version of “I Can’t Get Started.”
