Originally quite a child prodigy, Joey Alexander (who was born in 2003) taught himself to play the piano when he was six and developed so quickly that within three years he was already winning contests for his playing.
He performed with Wynton Marsalis when he was ten and recorded most of his debut album before he turned 11, amazing listeners and his fellow musicians with his mature and inventive playing.
Unlike many prodigies, Joey Alexander has continued to develop and mature as can be heard and seen on this rendition of “If I Were A Bell” when he was 21.
Alexander starts out solo, performs as a duo with veteran bassist John Clayton (who contributed the adventurous arrangement), and with backing by the WDR Big Band.
