Carl Saunders has long been one of the unheralded greats of the trumpet, a virtuoso who is often a stunning soloist.
Because he has long been based in the Los Angeles area, Saunders is not that well known outside of Southern California but his performances and occasional recordings (including as a member of the Bill Holman Orchestra and with Phil Woods) show that he has long been near the top of his field.
In 2009 he led an impressive big band for a performance sponsored by the Los Angeles Jazz Institute.
Saunders’ Orchestra, which includes such notables as altoist Lanny Morgan, tenor-saxophonist Doug Webb, and trombonists Scott Whitfield and Andy Martin, accompanies the masterful trumpeter during a memorable showcase.
