Thelonious Monk first recorded his tribute to his friend Bud Powell “In Walked Bud” in 1947.
While it was not recorded again by anyone until 1957 when Monk played it during a one-time collaboration with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, it started becoming a standard when the pianist’s quartet with Johnny Griffin tore through it in 1958.
In 2010 the brilliant pianist Fred Hersch paid tribute to both Powell and Monk with his inventive yet tasteful solo version in his own style.
