One of the great jazz trumpeters of the past 25 years, Carl Saunders (who is based in Southern California) also leads an occasional big band.

His all-star ensemble in 2003 included such notables as altoist Lanny Morgan, tenor-saxophonist Doug Webb, trumpeter Ron Stout, trombonists Andy Martin and Bob McChesney, and pianist Christian Jacob.

On this live performance of “Invitation” (arranged by Herbie Phillips), featured are the always fluent and colorful trombonist Scott Whitfield, altoist Brian Scanlon, and Saunders.

The trumpeter-leader takes a concise but spectacular solo that adds to the fire of the stirring performance.
