George Cables has been such a consistently brilliant pianist for over 50 years that his artistry is sometimes taken for granted.
As a reminder of how superb a player he has always been, here is a 2019 performance of Duke Ellington’s “It Don’t Mean A Thing” that the pianist performed in a trio with bassist Essiet Okono Essiet and drummer Victor Lewis.
Cables sounds relaxed during a passionate performance that is filled with creative and swinging ideas; Lewis makes a brief statement of his own.
