Monty Alexander has been one of the giants of jazz piano since the 1960s, often displaying the technique of an Oscar Peterson but in his own voice.
For this rendition of “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” Alexander and his trio show a great deal of restraint as the pianist adds subtle rhythms and caresses the song’s melody while using space in a manner reminiscent of Ahmad Jamal.
The result is a tasteful and concise version that puts the focus on the theme even while Alexander adds some creative touches to the song.
