Happy Birthday Bunky Green

April 23, 1935

Jazz Baltica

Alto saxophonist and educator Vernice “Bunky” Green was born April 23, 1935 and raised in
Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

His first big break as a player was taking over for Jackie McLean in the Charles Mingus band.

A move to Chicago saw him playing with Louie Bellson, Andrew Hill, Sonny Stitt, and Yusef Lateef.

In 1972, Green began teaching at Chicago State University and he later headed the jazz studies program at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville.

After re-accessing his playing, Green deviated from his initial Charlie Parker influenced sound and found his own distinct style.
