Phineas Newborn Jr. performs with his trio in California on a 1962 episode of the TV show “Jazz Scene USA” hosted by Oscar Brown Jr.
Born in Whiteville, Tennessee in 1931, he got his first professional experience playing with an R&B band led by his father, a drummer and with his brother Calvn On guitar.
In 1956, he moved to New York City where his trios and quartets included players like Oscar Pettiford, Kenny Clarke, George Joyner and Philly Joe Jones.
Jazz commentator Scott Yanow has referred to Newborn as “one of the most technically skilled and brilliant pianists in jazz.”
