Joe Avery’s Blues – 2024

Theo Croker

A New Orleans favorite with Emmet Cohen

The grandson of the great trumpeter Doc Cheatham, trumpeter Theo Croker has gone his own way throughout his career, playing adventurous jazz and music that is difficult to classify.

However on this performance from pianist Emmet Cohen’s now-legendary podcast series Emmet’s Place, he performs a New Orleans favorite, a vintage and exuberant blues called “Joe Avery’s Blues.”

Actually Croker just makes a brief statement before tenor-saxophonist Anthony Ware (playing some impressive staccato runs), pianist Cohen (sounding a bit like Professor Longhair), singer Tyreek McDole, and drummer Herlin Riley (with bassist Russell Hall in support) get to make their statements.

The results are quite fun.
