Born and raised in Southern California, Parlato won the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Vocals Competition in 2003, began her solo career two years later, and has become an influential singer, leading six albums of her own and guesting on dozens of others.
At a tribute to guitarist Kenny Burrell on Aug. 18, 2013, Gretchen Parlato performs a dreamlike version of Wayne Shorter’s “Juju”; this rendition also includes a passionate tenor solo from Kamasi Washington and stimulating accompaniment by pianist John Beasley, bassist Trevor Ware, and drummer Ronald Bruner Jr.
