Tierney Sutton has long been one of the top jazz singers based in Southern California and, although she interprets lyrics well, she really excels as a scat singer.
For this version of Nat King Cole’s 1964 hit “L-O-V-E,” she is joined by pianist Emmet Cohen, bassist Philip Norris, drummer Kyle Poole, and tenor-saxophonist Julian Lee.
Tierney Sutton starts the song at a rapid pace by scatting unaccompanied and, if anything, the pace quickens during the performance.
After her horn-like scatting, tenor-saxophonist Julian Lee does well during his solo and then Emmet Cohen raises the excitement level by really tearing into the piece.
A trade off with drummer Poole and a drum solo precede some wild ensembles that just barely stay under control to the finish.
