Throughout much of her career, Carla Bley was best known as a very original composer, arranger, and bandleader, whether at the head of all-star avant-garde combos or her own big band.
However, during the past 25 years, she has been heard much more often as a pianist, usually in duets or trios that included electric bassist Steve Swallow.
For this version of her composition “Lawns” which was filmed on Aug. 7, 2014, Bley is featured in a duet with Swallow.
Bley puts plenty of emotion into her thoughtful ballad, a feeling that is continued by Swallow during his solo.
