Harry James (1916-83) was one of the great jazz trumpeters in addition to being one of the most famous.
While his most creative period was at the head of his big band in the 1940s, James continued playing excellent solos up until near the end of his life, and he was popular enough to keep his orchestra together (with occasional time off) for decades.
From the Ed Sullivan Show in 1968 during a special program dedicated to the music of Irving Berlin, Harry James and his big band roar through “Let’s Face The Music And Dance” and “Let Yourself Go.”
In addition to James, his longtime tenor-saxophonist Corky Corcoran has a short solo and drummer Sonny Payne drives the ensembles.
