Born and raised in Chile, Melissa Aldana started playing the alto-sax when she was six, switching to tenor after she heard Sonny Rollins.

She began performing in local jazz clubs as a young teenager and in 2005 was discovered by pianist Danilo Perez who booked her at the Panama Jazz Festival.

Aldana attended Berklee during 2005-09, moved to New York after she graduated, won the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition in 2013, and led eight albums during 2010-26.

She recorded “Little Church” for her Filin album.

The soothing but passionate ballad by Hermeto Pascoal has the tenor-saxophonist joined by pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba, bassist Peter Washington, and drummer Kush Abadey.
