Before he became primarily known to a large audience as primarily a singer, Nat King Cole was one of the great swing pianists, leading a drumless trio throughout the 1940s.

By 1949, Cole’s trio, which at the time also included guitarist Irving Ashby and bassist Johnny Miller, grew by one with the addition of Jack Costanza on bongos.

For this Snader Transcription which was made for television, Cole’s quartet performs a standard from the early 1930s, “Little Girl.”

Cole shows his skills as both a singer and a pianist while guitarist Ashby also has a fine solo.
