Brew Moore (1924-73) is perhaps best known for once saying that anyone who doesn’t play tenor like Lester Young is wrong.
Moore, who was also open to the influence of Charlie Parker, belonged to the same generation as “Four Brothers” tenors such as Stan Getz, Zoot Sims, and Al Cohn.
While he never achieved great fame or prosperity, Moore was a consistently rewarding soloist who spent periods playing regularly in San Francisco and Europe.
In this 1961 recording in France, Moore is featured playing “Zonky,” “Satin Doll,” and “Broadway” in a quartet with three other Americans who had relocated to Europe: organist Lou Bennett, guitarist Jimmy Gourley, and drummer Kenny Clarke.
