One of the greatest high-note trumpeters of all time, a bandleader who always encouraged his sidemen, and a charismatic figure, Maynard Ferguson had his biggest commercial successes in the 1970s.
He recorded “MacArthur Park” in 1970 and it was part of his repertoire throughout the decade.
Ferguson confines himself to the opening and closing melody statements, featuring several of his sidemen including trombonist Randy Purcell, trumpeter Lynn Nicholson, flugelhornist Don Hahn (who takes an excellent solo), and Alan Zavod on electric piano.
The leader was a cheerleader for his sidemen and one can see their appreciation and joyful team spirit in their smiles during this extended version of “MacArthur Park.”
