In 1937, Tommy Dorsey and his orchestra had a giant hit with “Marie.”
The original version had a vocal by Jack Leonard with the bandmembers joining in, a classic Bunny Berigan solo and a bit of Bud Freeman on tenor.
In 1963 for their performance on the Ed Sullivan Show, the Dorsey band (led by the very versatile Sam Donahue since TD had passed away in 1956) did a partial recreation of the hit.
There is no vocal but the trumpet section recreates Berigan’s original solo and, most significantly, the great trumpeter Charlie Shavers and Sam Donahue on tenor split the final chorus.
Donahue was particularly busy during this performance, taking the melody chorus on valve trombone and joining in with the trumpet section for the Berigan solo, in addition to playing tenor.
