15 years before he largely left jazz to become a pop and r&b producer, Quincy Jones led his finest band.

He toured Europe with his big band and, although they scuffled a bit for work, they left behind many fine recordings and surviving live broadcasts.

For this version of Bobby Timmons’ “Moanin,’” the great flugelhornist Clark Terry takes a typically joyful and personal solo, and the orchestra displays its power and personal sound.
