Composed by Bobby Timmons, this live recording’s pianist, “Moanin’” is a 1950s track that has since become a jazz standard. At a time when bop was starting to take off – and fusion was just around the corner – artists like Timmons and bassist Charles Mingus (not in the Jazz Messengers were using this kind of sound to take jazz back to its roots.
