“Moment’s Notice” was one of John Coltrane’s greatest compositions, a song with a memorable melody and very original chord changes that have challenged horn players during the past 65 years.

Two of the best tenors in modern jazz, Seamus Blake and Troy Roberts, are joined by pianist Emmet Cohen, bassist Russell Hall, and drummer Jonathan Barber or a hard-swinging and often adventurous romp through the Coltrane tune.

Blake builds up his solo gradually from being somewhat mellow to becoming very passionate and, when the trio plays some surprising ideas behind Roberts’ solo (often dropping out or changing the mood and groove), listen to how he reacts immediately to their ideas.

Not to be outdone, Emmet Cohen plays quite a powerhouse solo before a concise Barber drum solo and the closing melody conclude the memorable performance.
