Dexter Gordon (1923-90) had a fascinating and episodic career that included three major comebacks.

Despite the ups and downs, he always played quite well and he recorded scores of very worthy albums.

This documentary from 1996 mostly tells the Dexter Gordon Story through his own words since he was interviewed on film many times in his life, and through plenty of footage of his playing.

Also included are interviews with Phil Woods, Steve Lacy, Woody Shaw, Buell Neidlinger, Niels Pedersen and a few others while the music includes “Loose Walk,” “King Neptune,” “Soy Califas,” “Fried Bananas,” “’Round Midnight” and “More Than You Know.”

Dexter Gordon’s warmth and humanity shine throughout this fine film.
