Any time a jazz fan thinks that they have it covered and knows about all of the talents on the current scene, they should explore the many unheralded greats who perform regularly in Europe.
Born and based in Spain, and 18 at the time of this performance, Andrea Motis is both a fine jazz singer and an excellent swing-based trumpeter.
On a version of “My Baby Just Cares For Me” that is given a rhythmic groove that recalls Nina Simone’s hit recording, Ms. Motis sings and takes a trumpet solo during a performance that also features Scott Hamilton on tenor, short spots for guitarist Josep Traver and organist Ignsi Terraza, and support from bassist-leader Joan Chamorro and drummer Esteve Pi.
