In 2013 at the Marciac Jazz Festival, the Wynton Marsalis Quintet teamed up with the Sachal Jazz Ensemble from Pakistan to perform a version of “My Favorite Things” inspired by John Coltrane’s recording.

Pianist Dan Nimmer and tenor-saxophonist Walter Blanding do an excellent job of sounding like McCoy Tyner and John Coltrane during the melody statement and then there are sitar, tenor, flute (Baqir Abbas), piano, and tabla (Urstad Ijaz Hussain Baloo Khan) solos; Wynton Marsalis confines himself to playing in the ensemble.

While the individual solos could have been quite a bit longer, this unique version of “My Favorite Things” is quite memorable with two different musical worlds coming together as one.
