One of the most beautiful ballads of the post-bop era, “Naima” was written in 1959 by John Coltrane for his then-wife Juanita Naima Grubs.

Coltrane recorded it a lot; first on “Giant Steps” and also on “Live! at the Village Vanguard”, “The Complete Copenhagen Concert”, “Afro Blue”, “Impressions”, and “Live at the Village Vanguard Again!”.

Along with “Giant Steps”, the tune has become a core jazz standard.

John Coltrane performs with his Quartet during a 1965 live European TV broadcast.

Personnel:

John Coltrane, tenor sax
McCoy Tyner, piano
Jimmy Garrison, bass
Elvin Jones, drums
