While he never quite became a household name in the United States, tenor-saxophonist Barney Wilen (1937-96) was a major tenor-saxophonist from France.

He first recorded with Roy Haynes in 1955 while still a teenager, played next to Miles Davis on the soundtrack of the 1957 film Elevator To The Gallows, wrote several soundtracks of his own, worked with Thelonious Monk, explored free jazz for a time in the late 1960s and, after working in other styles of music, returned to straight ahead jazz by the late 1980s.

Wilen is featured on a high-powered version of Duke Jordan’s “No Problem” with a quartet also including pianist Jacky Terrasson (typically brilliant during his solo), bassist Gilles Naturel, and drummer Peter Gritz at a 1990 concert in Japan.
