Guitarist Bill Frisell has been full of welcome surprises ever since he burst upon the jazz scene in the 1980s.

Whether playing avant-garde explorations early in his career, coming up with his version of country-inspired Americana on more recent recordings, or making every note count a la Jim Hall (one of his heroes), Frisell has always had his own sound.

On this duet version of Sonny Rollins’ “Oleo” from 2019, Frisell at first emulates an organ before stating the melody.

Joined by bassist Thomas Morgan for an intimate and relaxed version, Bill Frisell epitomizes subtle creativity on an intriguing and lightly swinging performance.
