One of the greatest jazz guitarists ever, Joe Pass (1929-94) could play with groups and on duets with Ella Fitzgerald and Oscar Peterson, but he was truly the master of the unaccompanied guitar.
In the 1970s, his series of Virtuoso albums for Norman Granz’s Pablo label featured him playing exclusively solo, not only embracing ballads but romping through uptempo tunes such as “Cherokee” and “How High The Moon.”
One never missed the piano, bass or drums when Pass played solo; he supplied all of the parts.
From the 1980s, Joe Pass is featured unaccompanied, making up a blues as he goes along and never running out of inventive ideas.
