After an innovative but often tumultuous decade, bassist Charles Mingus spent much of 1966-69 in semi-retirement.
In 1970 Mingus began his successful return to the jazz scene, with momentum generated by a notable all-star Town Hall concert in 1972.
Later that year, Mingus toured Europe with a short-lived quintet comprised of trumpeter Joe Gardner, baritonist Hamiet Bluiett, pianist John Foster, and drummer Roy Brooks.
They performed “Peggy’s Blue Skylight” in Spain on Nov. 14, 1972 with the obscure but explosive pianist John Foster taking honors before Bluiett takes the music a bit outside.
