Perdido – 1999

Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz At Lincoln Center Orchestra

The band sounds like Duke Ellington’s as Wynton wails

The musical role model for the Jazz At Lincoln Center Orchestra has generally been Duke Ellington.

On this version of Juan Tizol’s “Perdido” from 1999, the JLCO uses a similar arrangement as Ellington’s and, with baritonist Joe Temperley anchoring the ensemble like Harry Carney, the band sounds pretty close to Duke’s.

Trumpeter Ryan Kisor has a brief spot and there are fine solos from trombonist Ron Westray, altoist Wessell Anderson, and bassist Rodney Whittaker but this is a showcase for Wynton Marsalis (who takes two excellent solos) and the mighty ensembles.
