Baden Powell (1937-2000) was a brilliant Brazilian guitarist who also wrote a variety of guitar pieces including “Samba Triste.”
While he played jazz standards at times and recorded with Herbie Mann, in his later years Powell often performed at unaccompanied solo concerts.
This remarkable film clip features Powell playing his “Prelude In A Minor,” a brooding and melancholy work that has him stating a pattern with his right hand that sets the mood for the piece.
The result is a hypnotic work that displays Powell’s endurance and creativity.
