Richie Cole (1948-2020) was a brilliant alto-saxophonist who mastered the bebop vocabulary and was not shy to display his wit in his playing, particularly on uptempo tunes.

One of his favorite ballads was “Pure Imagination” from Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

Cole emphasizes the beauty of the melody during a quietly emotional performance with a local rhythm section in Wisconsin, putting in a surprising song quote at its conclusion.
