Altoist Cannonball Adderley hit it big in 1959 when he recorded “This Here” with his quintet.

Adderley’s band, which was one of the most popular jazz groups of the 1960s, is featured on Ralph Gleason’s Jazz Casual program from Oct. 24, 1961.

In addition to a brief but excellent interview with the altoist, the group performs Joe Zawinul’s swinging “Scotch and Soda,” “Arriving Soon” and Sam Jones’ “Unit Seven.”

Cannonball, his brother cornetist Nat Adderley and pianist Joe Zawinul have plenty of solo space while bassist Sam Jones and drummer Louis Hayes are swinging in support.

This is one of the earliest film clips of the Cannonball Adderley Quintet and it shows why they attracted such a big audience.

Personnel:

Cannonball Adderley, alto sax
Nat Adderley, cornet
Joe Zawinul, piano
Sam Jones, bass
Louis Hayes, drums
